Amoy Street in Wan Chai of Hong Kong was first established as a marine lot on the then-coastline. Later, in 1883, it was bought by a certain Dr. Patrick Manson (the founder of Dairy Farm), who came to Hong Kong from Amoy, where he had been serving as a medical officer in the Chinese Maritime Customs. (Quoted from TimeOut Hong Kong June 18 - July 1, 2008). Amoy is the former Western name for Xiamen in Fujian, China.
Amoy Street may not be able to keep its shy, quiet charming environment because Hong Kong Government is set to ruin it. According to Urban Renewal Authority proposal the southern end steps and platform be demolished, making way for a lay by, turnaround and through access to Queen's Road East. Residents are worried about the substantial increase in traffic.
